International Astronomy Day 2008

EVENT SCHEDULE

Saturday, 10 May

3:00pm to 4:00pm (Main Building): SPACE STORYTIME

East Baton Rouge Parish Library Children's Department staff will be here to present a storytime for children ages six to ten. True space stories will be read!

3:00pm to 7:00pm (Outside Main Building): RIDING THE RADIO WAVES

The Baton Rouge Amateur Radio Club will have a live "rig" set up to introduce visitors to the joys of broadcasting over those bands set aside just for "hams." You can even learn to send your name in Morse code!

4:30pm to 5:30pm (Front Grounds): GREAT MOONBUGGY DEMONSTRATION

Scotlandville Magnet's moonbuggy team placed second for design when it took part in the Great Moonbuggy Race a few weeks ago in Huntsville, Alabama. The team will be here to show off that very moonbuggy!

6:00pm to 7:00pm (Front Grounds): PLANET WALK

HRPO Education Curator Craig Brenden takes visitors on one of his famous "shrinkings" of the Solar System. From the Sun to the outer planets, everything will be within walking distance...or will it?

6:30pm to 7:30pm (Main Building): MAGNIFICENT MAGNIFICATION

HRPO Center Supervisor Tom Northrop introduces visitors to the concepts of magnifying an image using a Moritex MS-400. He'll have sample materials and objects, and will magnify those provided by you—within reason!

7:30pm to 8:30pm (Main Building): INTRODUCING ASTRONOMY

It's a science, a hobby, a recreation...and a lot of fun. This presentation is meant for the absolute beginner. The audience will learn the basics about stargazing, along with resources and support from long-time amateurs.

9:00pm to 10:00pm (Back Grounds): BINOCULAR SKY TOUR

You are invited to bring your own binoculars as Merrill Hess, asteroid discoverer and president of the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society, takes you through the spring sky to encounter all the surprising and amazing objects you can see—just with a pair of binocs!

VIEWING SCHEDULE

Here is a list of potential targets from which the telescope operators will have to choose on 10 May, and the times the targets will be above the Observatory's treeline. Keep in mind, not all operators will be able to image all objects; it depends on the type of telescope, the experience of the operator and whether he or she will have "Go-To" capability. Also, some operators may have personal lists from which they will be selecting.

We strongly encourage visitors to bring binoculars.

PARKING

The main parking area will on be Observatory grounds. Please pull in to a parking slot. Please do not park on a curve or alongside piping; this endangers both your vehicle and vehicles trying to pass. Please do not drive faster than 10mph on Observatory grounds. If driving on Observatory grounds after sunset, please turn off your headlights. If your car does not allow you to turn off your headlights, please park as far away from the main building as possible.

The secondary parking area will be a few yards west next to the archery range and softball fields. Visitors can walk up the hill from that area.

Please follow the direction of our park rangers.
