What is ROBIE?

As education has turned toward inquiry learning, we must look for new and inventive ways to teach science concepts.  Modeling how real live science is done is such a way.  With the goal of helping teachers provide real life, practical experiences for their students, LSU's Department of Physics and Astronomy has developed ROBIE:  Robotic Internet Experiences.

Under the ROBIE project we have developed new "ROBOTS" that can be accessed by students over the Internet and developed a teacher guide that builds upon existing curriculum to enhance the classroom experience.  The robots available through this site are:

ATIC
Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter

The ATIC experiment was constructed at LSU to detect and study high-energy cosmic rays that originate from outside our solar system and may be caused by Supernova explosions.

RADIO

Through this robot, you users will be able to remotely control a ham radio and listen to satellites as well as signals from around the world!

TELESCOPE

This robot is still under construction but when it is finished, users will be able to remotely control a telescope and view the stars through the web!

The Teacher's Guide  available through this site provides teachers with benchmarks, lesson matrices, a technology guide, and other useful resources.

Why the name "ROBIE"?

We gratefully acknowledge the Louisiana Technology Innovation Fund, the Louisiana Systemic Initiatives Program (LaSIP), and Louisiana State University for their support of this project.
